Purpose of Position Purpose of Position The purpose of this position is to perform legal and advisory services as prescribed by County Attorney to accomplish effective representation of state, county, and county personnel. Implement the best acceptable alternatives for problems encountered by county officials, department heads, and employees. Determines and administers justice to those believed to have violated the criminal laws of the state. Keeps abreast of the new and ever-changing laws, court decisions, rules and regulations.

- Serves as a positive example to Department Heads and County personnel with regards to workplace actions, decisions, management skills, attitude, and adherence to County policy.
- Embodies teamwork and cooperation within and across County departments and with the public.
- Identify, define, evaluate, and effectively resolve problems facing county officials, department heads, and employees; determine alternative courses of action and effectively recommend the most advantageous course of action by the officer, department head, or employee faced with the problem; proceed to assist in implementation of the solution.
- Monitor operations of county officers, department heads, and employees to ensure compliance with law.
- Represent county in litigation, including pleadings, motions, legal research, and court appearances; prepare cases for trial by analyzing investigator reports, interviewing persons involved, drafting legal documents, presenting evidence and arguments in court, and authority to negotiate settlements when determined appropriate, as well as represent county and state in civil and criminal appeals in matters not resolved at trial court level.
- Review drafts and negotiate contracts and other legal documents for the county.
- Study, interpret, and apply laws, decisions, rules of court, and other authorities in preparation of cases, opinions, and briefs.

Minimum Education and Experience/Special Requirements - Juris Doctorate and moderate experience practicing law.
- License to practice law in Minnesota.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Must pass a criminal background check.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Thorough knowledge of civil and criminal or juvenile laws.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of legal research.
- Thorough knowledge of the pleadings and practice of effective presentation of court cases.
- Skill in interpersonal relationships.
- Ability to appraise and organize facts and to present evidence and other material in written or oral form.
- Skill in conducting legal research, analysis of data, determination of proper courses of action, and presentation of facts and arguments.
- Ability to negotiate.
Physical Requirements This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Short Term Disability offered by Lincoln Financial Protect your income for the 1st three (3) months of disability. Rates vary by age category and you select your level of coverage from weekly benefits of $100 - $2,000 in $100 increments, not to exceed 60% of weekly gross earnings.
Long Term Disability offered by Lincoln Financial Protect your income beginning the 4th month of a disability and benefits are payable for injury, sickness or pregnancy up to your normal retirement age, as defined by Social Security.
