The City of Chisholm, Minnesota (population 4,775) seeks an experienced and dynamic law enforcement professional to serve as its next Chief of Police. This position has become available following the retirement of our long-serving Chief, marking an important transition period for our department and community. Located in the historic Mesabi Iron Range, Chisholm blends its rich mining heritage with emerging sectors in tourism and healthcare, creating a unique community that honors its past while embracing its future.

The Department

The Chisholm Police Department operates from a new, state-of-the-art law enforcement center and consists of 13 dedicated professionals and a $2,300,000 department budget. The department features a young, energetic, and proactive workforce eager to take on challenges and grow through shared experiences and mutual learning. The department is backed by a very cooperative and pro law enforcement community.

The Position

This hands-on leadership role requires balancing administrative expertise with operational excellence while maintaining a strong community presence. The successful candidate will lead by example, fostering a culture of professional development, ethical conduct, and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Provide strategic leadership and direction for the department

Manage departmental operations, budget, and personnel

Implement contemporary policing principles and professional best practices

Build and maintain strong relationships with community stakeholders

Ensure transparency and accountability in all department operations

Participate actively in community events and initiatives

Mentor and develop department staff

Collaborate with city leadership and other department

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be:

Experienced in implementing contemporary policing strategies

Skilled in building trust and fostering collaboration

Dedicated to professional development and continuous improvement

Strong communicator with excellent interpersonal skills

Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree in law enforcement or closely related field

Minimum 8 years of law enforcement experience

Minimum 2 years of supervisory or management experience in law enforcement

Valid driver's license

POST certified

Must be able to pass comprehensive background check

Compensation and Benefits

• Salary Range: $105,000 - $110,000
