Salary range:
Total Negotiated Salary (TNS) calculation includes AAMC salary benchmarks which can range from $186,227 - $325,725. The posted UC salary scales ( set the base pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. This position includes membership in the health science compensation plan [ which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.

Position description


The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of California, Irvine -School of Medicine invites applications for the position of Medical Physicist. This appointment will be in either the Professor of Clinical X series, the Health Sciences Clinical Professor series, or the Professor-in-Residence series, at either the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank.


Successful candidates will establish and maintain a robust quality and safety program and facilitate resultant process improvements, driven by data. This position is responsible for teaching residents and students and promoting educational activities including the physics residency and dosimetry training programs. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent in Medical Physics or related fields, and have clinical experience in clinical Medical Physics. Successful candidates will have superior people skills and aspire to be a leader in the field through independent research, teaching, and innovation. This role reports directly to the Vice Chair of Medical Physics, and the Chair of Radiation Oncology.


Successful candidates must work collaboratively within and outside of the Department. Primary responsibilities include:


* Oversee all required quality assurance (QA) and ensure that inspections, calibrations and verifications are performed to maintain compliance with radiation regulations, including federal, state, and Nuclear Regulatory Commission; and Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Programs.


* Represent the Radiation Oncology Department on Hospital Leadership committees about quality, safety, and performance improvement.


* Develop, grow, and sustain a program within the Department of Radiation Oncology centered around patient safety, process improvement, professional outcome assessment, and patient satisfaction.


* Instill a culture of safety and quality throughout the Department and make QA a centerpiece.


* Monitor, participate in, and facilitate clinical operations safety programs, including radiation safety, universal protocol, and Joint Commission requirements.


* Establish compliance with National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG) through formulation, implementation, and regular review and upgrading of departmental policies in all areas of patient safety (including time outs, patient identification, site and side marking, patient falls, medication reconciliation, and any new goals introduced).


* Establish a program of walk rounds for real-time assessment of safety and quality issues.


* Manage reporting of, and responses to, adverse events in Radiation Oncology, and reduce the risks of adverse events by ongoing analysis of reported and potential adverse events and near misses.


* Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) relating to patient safety, service access, and customer satisfaction, focusing on safety issues such as patient identification, procedural complications, radiation exposure, and technical errors.


* Develop mechanisms for collecting underlying data needed to measure KPIs, and tools to efficiently generate KPIs in an actionable timeframe, including a quality scorecard that posts relevant data for each working group within the Department.


* Prepare the Department to gain American College of Radiology (ACR or APEX) accreditation status and assist in preparation for; and participation in, site visits by regulatory and accreditation bodies.


Criteria for the Professor of Clinical X Series:


The incumbent will be expected to direct patient care, conduct substantial and meaningful research, teach residents and medical students, and perform public and University service. Excellent teaching is an essential criterion for appointment in this series. Priority will be given to candidates with a proven track record of academic productivity, as demonstrated through high-impact publications, thematic-based research, and grant funding.


Criteria for the Health Sciences Clinical Professor Series:


The incumbent will be expected to direct patient care; teach resident and medical students; participate in research and creative work; and perform public and University service.


Criteria for the Professor-in-Residence Series:


The incumbent will be expected to conduct substantial and meaningful research; teach students; direct patient care; and perform public and University service. Engage in a program of scholarly activity, including the pursuit of intramural and extramural funding sources to support original research in the field of radiation oncology.


Located at the University of California, Irvine Chao Family Cancer Center in Fountain Valley, California, the Department of Radiation Oncology is an integral part of the NCI-designated Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Department is equipped with a robust blend of technology, including a dedicated HDR brachytherapy suite and an intraoperative unit. Further equipment upgrades are planned. The Department features a four-year Radiation Oncology residency training program and a two-year Medical Physics residency. The Department has an active Radiation Biology Division that currently ranks among the top programs in the nation concerning NIH funding. The Department participates in NRG/RTOG and SWOG and encourages investigator-initiated clinical and translational trials. The Division has undergone a transformative change with current and future site expansion in recent years.
