Position Overview

We are seeking a highly capable Director of Operations to lead and coordinate all operational

aspects of our growing excavation and utility construction company. This role is responsible for

overseeing field operations, project execution, and operational strategy to ensure projects are

delivered safely, on time, on budget, and profitably.

This is a hands-on leadership role. The Director of Operations will directly manage

Superintendents, Project Managers, and oversee field crews. In addition, this role plays a key part

in supporting business development through client relationships, bid strategy, and operational

excellence.

 

Key Responsibilities

Field Operations & Leadership

• Provide leadership, mentorship, and oversight to Superintendents managing additional

crews.

• Ensure crews consistently meet productivity, quality, and safety standards.

• Lead by example in the field, setting expectations for accountability, performance, and

professionalism.

• Address performance issues promptly and effectively.

 

Project Management Oversight

• Oversee all active projects from startup through closeout.

• Supervise and support Project Managers with day to day operations.

Review and manage:

◦ Project budgets and cost reports

◦ Labor and equipment utilization

◦ Job cost forecasts and billing accuracy

• Ensure projects are completed on schedule, within scope, and within approved budgets.

 

Operational Coordination

• Align Superintendents, Project Managers, and field crews with company goals and

priorities.

• Lead weekly operations meetings and maintain visibility across all projects.

• Resolve scheduling, manpower, or equipment conflicts quickly and decisively.

• Coordinate closely with administrative functions to ensure smooth execution of:

◦ Billing

◦ Change orders

◦ Equipment usage

◦ Project documentation

 

Business Development & Client Relations

• Build and maintain strong relationships with General Contractors, developers, and key

vendors.

• Participate in preconstruction meetings, bid reviews, and proposal strategy discussions.

• Support company growth by identifying opportunities for repeat work and new market

opportunities.

• Represent the company at industry events and key client meetings.

 

Process Improvement & Strategy

• Identify inefficiencies in field operations, project execution, or internal processes.

• Assist in developing and implementing SOPs for project startup, execution, and closeout.

• Evaluate operational systems (scheduling, reporting, communication) and recommend

improvements.

• Support long-term operational planning and scalability initiatives.

 

Reporting & Accountability

• Track and report key operational metrics, including:

◦ Project performance

◦ Crew productivity

◦ Financial and schedule forecasts

• Maintain accountability scorecards for Superintendents and Project Managers.

• Provide regular feedback and performance evaluations for direct reports.

• Assist ownership with budgeting, forecasting, and backlog planning.

 

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience in excavation, heavy civil, utilities, or similar construction

operations

• Proven leadership experience managing field crews and project teams

• Strong understanding of job costing, scheduling, and construction financials

• Ability to balance hands-on field leadership with high-level operational oversight

• Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills

• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
