Job Description

Domestic Violence Intake Navigator

The full-time Domestic Violence Intake Navigator is responsible for coordinating and providing support for client service activities for victims of domestic violence (DV). This position performs and coordinates intake for the domestic violence practice group, and provides support, advocacy, information, and referrals to clients. The position also supports the work of the attorneys as needed and helps MLSA attorneys build and maintain professional relationships with criminal justice professionals, victim service providers, and other stakeholders throughout the state.

Specific Duties:

  • Process intake applications from survivors of domestic violence and conduct initial interviews by phone.
  • Determine if there is a legal aspect to an applicant's problem and summarize the issues.
  • Create computer files for new clients and new cases.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of, and strong working relationships with legal and social service agencies that provide services to DV victims and make appropriate referrals and collaborate as needed.
  • Provide overall support to MLSA's domestic violence attorneys.
  • Calendar case-related dates, advice appointments, and events in the system.
  • Scan and upload applications and client documents to MLSA's case management system.
  • Assist in developing working partnerships and conducting outreach with legal and social service agencies, and criminal justice professionals.
  • Assist with data gathering, file management, and grant reporting.
  • Receive and review cases from intake staff. Act as a liaison between DV attorneys and all intake staff.
  • Manage emergency appointments for DV attorneys.
  • Other duties assigned by the Intake Manager, the Supervising Attorney of the domestic violence practice group, or MLSA management.

  • Knowledge and proficiency in utilizing computer software such as MS Excel, MS Word, client database, computer-based research, internet-based project management programs, etc.
  • Ability to use technologies to communicate with colleagues and volunteers in rural and remote locations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to manage projects.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, and to exercise discretion and good judgment.
  • Ability to travel, occasionally overnight.

Preferred Skills & Attributes:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent educational experience.
  • Trained in trauma-informed services.
  • Prior legal experience with providing services to domestic and sexual assault survivors.
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion through volunteer activities and internships is valued.
  • An understanding of the civil equal justice legal needs of low-income people, including the unique needs of populations that experience particular barriers to access to justice systems, and of effective approaches and methods for addressing those needs.
  • Experience working collaboratively and empathetically with diverse groups of colleagues, firm partners, and clients who have varying cultural backgrounds, perspectives, experience, and expertise.
