Position Title: Entry-Level Police Officer
The City of Hilliard is accepting applications and test results for entry-level police officers from October 1 through October 31, 2024. Candidates must complete the NTN exam and Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA) by October 31, 2024, to be considered. It is recommended to complete the PSSA promptly to avoid delays in the process.
If you have previously taken the NTN test and your scores remain valid, contact NTN to transfer your scores to the City of Hilliard before the application deadline.
The City does not require a Physical Abilities Test (PAT) through the National Testing Network; instead, PAT testing will occur during the recruitment process through the City of Hilliard. Candidates must submit an online application by October 31, 2024.
Hiring Process
October 1 - October 31: Complete NTN Test, PSSA, and submit applications.
Physical Fitness Testing: November 17
Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ): Sent to candidates for completion.
Oral Board Interviews: Week of December 9

Nature of Work - General Description
Under the supervision of a Sergeant or Senior Officer, a Police Officer patrols designated areas, ensuring compliance with state laws and city ordinances; responds to emergencies and suspected crimes; takes necessary actions to prevent crime and apprehend suspects; assists citizens in various situations; and performs other duties as directed by supervisory personnel. The Hilliard Division of Police focuses on a "Community-Oriented Policing" philosophy, emphasizing service and proactive engagement with residents to address community concerns.
Essential Functions of Work
Operates a police vehicle under various conditions, including emergencies.
Enforces DUI and traffic laws.
Makes arrests and uses physical force when necessary.
Transports prisoners and detained individuals.
Investigates accidents and crime scenes, gathering evidence and maintaining reports.
Monitors safety conditions and reports hazards.
Assists citizens, including stranded motorists.
Checks the security of homes and businesses.
Executes warrants and testifies in court.
Operates firearms and provides first aid.
Interacts with the community to address concerns and promote safety.
Completes accurate reports and maintains records.
Assists with juvenile cases and works with school authorities.
Regulates traffic and attends community meetings.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Knowledge: Federal, state, and local law enforcement laws; law enforcement practices and procedures; safety standards; municipal government functions.
Skills: Unarmed self-defense, communication, problem-solving, and data analysis.
Abilities: Effective communication, understanding detailed instructions, sound judgment, managing emergencies, and using investigative methods.
Other Requirements
Successful completion of a state-certified Peace Officer basic training program (required immediately upon appointment if not already completed).
Must maintain certification for operating on-duty and off-duty firearms.
Age requirement: 21 years or older at the time of the written examination and under 45 at the time of application or appointment.
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Valid Ohio Driver's License at the time of appointment.
Clean background with no felony convictions.
Successful completion of all selection phases, including a written exam, physical evaluation, interviews, background check, polygraph, psychological and medical examinations, and drug screening.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to demonstrate strength and dexterity in using hands and feet.
Ability to sit, walk, and stand for long periods.
Safe and effective operation of motor vehicles and firearms.
Vision correctable to 20/20 and free of color deficiencies that would impede job performance.
Working Conditions
Regular attendance, adherence to training, and compliance with all safety regulations are essential requirements for this position. The role involves both physical and mental challenges, requiring officers to interact with the public under various conditions while maintaining professionalism and tact.
