POSITION SUMMARY:

The Inland Fish and Wildlife Assessment Biologist, under the direction of the Program Director, is responsible for overseeing the tribal fishery assessment and research activities necessary for the proper management of treaty-based fish and wildlife harvest and representing Sault Tribe fish and wildlife interests on inter-governmental technical committees.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Plans and conduct fish and wildlife assessment and research activities.
  • Supervises and directs field staff schedules and completes performance appraisals.
  • Performs data/statistical analysis, i.e., quota generation and technical evaluation of management actions.
  • Represents tribal interests on many inter-governmental technical fisheries committees.
  • Writes technical reports and provides written and oral presentation of results and management recommendations to the appropriate entity/entities.
  • Develops and writes grant proposals.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Assists in planning program activities and developing strategies for addressing key issues.
  • All other job-related duties as assigned.

CONTACTS:

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, outside vendor/service providers, Tribal fishers, conservation and law enforcement agencies and other academic fish and wildlife agency representatives.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position heavy with lifting of 100 pounds maximum with team or dual lifting and frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Physical factors include constant typing; frequent standing, sitting, use of hearing, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, driving; occasional walking, pushing/pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, manual handling, use of smell, midrange/color/field of vision and bending. Working conditions include frequent exposure to weather and occasional exposure to extreme heat/cold, wet/humidity, noise, vibration, and air quality. Potential hazards include constant computer use; frequent equipment use, working on boats and exposure to deep water. Personal protection equipment includes rain suits/boots, dust masks, life jackets and eye protection.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Master's Degree in Fish or Wildlife Biology or Science required.

Experience: Three years of experience in fish/wildlife biology, fish/wildlife population dynamics-statistical analysis or fish and wildlife management preferred.

Certification/License: Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of fish and wildlife collection techniques, population dynamics and statistical analysis required. Knowledge of wildlife biology/management required. Knowledge of fish and wildlife research design required. Knowledge of computer-based fish and wildlife population modeling and use of software programs required. Problem solving skills required. Organizational skills –Must have excellent organizational skills, organizing work, prioritizing tasks and managing time. Leadership and team building skills required. Must have excellent communication skills and be able to effectively communicate technical findings and recommendations. Must be able to prepare clear, concise, thorough, meaningful, and grammatically correct written reports, letters, memoranda, policy and procedural drafts, and other written/technical documents. Must be capable of public speaking, conducting formal and informal meetings and conferences. Supervisory experience and excellent human resource management skills and abilities required. Grant writing skills preferred. Must be able to identify research/assessment needs and develop data collection and analysis plans. Must be capable of public speaking, conducting formal and informal meetings and conferences. Must be able to maintain tact and diplomacy under duress. Must be willing and able to work in a changing dynamic environment. Must be able to work extended hours when needed. Must be flexible and available to work various shifts, including nights, and weekends. Native American preferred.
