General Characteristics
An Orientation & Mobility Specialist provides assessment, training and follow-up services in all aspects of orientation & mobility. Services are provided in individual, group and field settings.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
1. With the Director of Services, plans, coordinates, and conducts assessment, training, and follow-up services in orientation & mobility in a combination of center-based and field-based settings in coordination with other staff members to meet current and future student and agency needs.
2. Ensures that training and course goals and objectives are in line with overall agency and program goals, objectives and policies.
3. Conducts an evaluation to assess the needs, interest, capabilities and desires of each student prior to the development of his or her Individualized Rehabilitation Service Plan (IRSP).
4. Regularly provide 20 or more hours of direct service per week.
5. Prepares all required reports in accordance with agency and professionally accepted standards on a timely basis.
6. Maintains appropriate client files in accordance with applicable policies and regulations.
7. Maintains professional certifications and/or licenses.
8. Informs the supervisor of any changes which may improve the rehabilitation program or agency as a whole.
9. Stays informed and knowledgeable of current trends, developments, research and practices in orientation & mobility and other relevant fields.
10. Informs students and other interested persons of the philosophy, scope, and activities of the Agency.
11. Assists in maintaining and updating curriculum.
12. Participates in public events sponsored by the Agency.
13. Attends staff meetings and in-service sessions as scheduled, and attend other meetings as assigned.
14. Assists in ordering necessary supplies and materials for orientation & mobility.
15. Driving within the services area required. Company car will be provided
Qualifications:
a. Certification from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS); or
b. Certification from the National Blindness Professional Certification Board (NBPCB) as a National Orientation and Mobility Certification (NOMC).
c. Individual who has completed all of the O&M curricula from and accredited college or university; is eligible for COMS or NOMC certification; is working under the clinical supervision of a COMS or NOMC; and applies for certification within six months from approval as an eligible employee of the agency from GA DOL and attains certification within one year.
