Job Description

The City of Minnetonka is seeking a temporary part-time History Researcher to conduct original historical research for the Minnetonka History Timeline Updatea grant-funded project supported by the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Program. The researcher will produce a comprehensive and inclusive timeline of Minnetonkas history that acknowledges and amplifies the experiences and contributions of underrepresented communities.

This work will serve as the foundation for a future multimedia timeline exhibit at Minnetonka City Hall that reflects the citys ongoing commitment to diversity equity and inclusion.

All applicants are required to submit a sample of their written work demonstrating research and writing ability. Examples may include an academic paper professional report or community-based research project.

Duties/Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities :
Research and Documentation

  • Conduct in-depth archival and primary source research on Minnetonkas history with emphasis on marginalized communities including BIPOC immigrant LGBTQIA and disabled populations.
  • Review existing local sources.
  • Examine city archives local newspapers historical society collections and organizational records.
  • Collect oral histories through interviews with community members faith leaders activists and cultural organizations. Identify and catalog relevant multimedia elements (audio video maps photographs and documents) for future exhibit inclusion.
Analysis and Synthesis
  • Create a draft timeline showing key milestones in Minnetonkas history and development.
  • Compile research findings into a clear and well-organized written report including sources references and supporting materials.
  • Work with independent peer reviewers to make sure the information is accurate objective and represents diverse perspectives.
  • Review feedback and finalize all research materials.
Community Engagement
  • Work collaboratively with tribal and community organizations to ensure historical accuracy and cultural sensitivity.
  • Support inclusive engagement efforts by aligning research with the citys DEI goals and community representation priorities.
  • Present research findings to city staff and the DEI Commission.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a college or university program in History Public History Anthropology Cultural Studies Archival Studies or a related field; OR have at least two years of relevant professional or community-based experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity equity and inclusion i n public history or research.
  • Strong skills in research design information organization and historical writing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word Excel) and comfort with digital archives and databases.
  • Ability to work independently manage multiple tasks and meet project deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience conducting oral history interviews or community-based research.
  • Familiarity with Minnesota or Twin Cities regional history especially suburban development and civil rights contexts.
  • Prior experience working with BIPOC immigrant disabled or LGBTQIA communities in historical or cultural projects.
  • Background in archival processing historical documentation or museum studies.
  • Demonstrated ability to create inclusive and accessible public history narratives.
