This position qualifies for recruitment incentives, including a $6,000 hiring bonus and $1,000 per month in housing and/or childcare subsidies, up to a total of $54,000 in recruitment incentives.
Examples of Duties:
Under immediate supervision, in a non-sworn training capacity, candidates develop the minimum qualifications required for a career in police service. Recruits receive instruction at the Long Beach Police Academy, which covers Police Department policies, weaponless defense, criminal and civil law, physical fitness, use of firearms, arrest procedures, community relations, emergency vehicle operations, and other mandated courses. Candidates may observe sworn officers in processing arrestees, perform non-sworn police support functions, and assist with traffic and crowd control during training.
Long Beach Police Academy:
Candidates who meet the minimum requirements will be invited to attend the California POST-accredited Long Beach Police Academy. The Academy training is designed to develop essential qualifications for a police service career, covering topics such as cultural awareness, leadership, ethics, discrimination awareness, community-oriented policing, crisis intervention, defensive tactics, use of force, and physical fitness.

Requirements to File:
Must be 20 ½ years of age or older at the time of filing
U.S. high school graduate or GED equivalent
Valid driver's license
Legally authorized to work in the U.S.
No felony convictions
Vision correctable to 20/20
No physical or mental limitations preventing the completion of duty assignments
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to read and make sound decisions
Comprehend and retain technical training materials
Endure strenuous physical activity
Demonstrate compassion and cultural sensitivity
Exercise tact and problem-solving in confrontational situations
Possess strong observation, communication, leadership, and public service qualities
Desirable Qualifications:
Recent college coursework in related fields and bilingual skills (Spanish, Khmer, or Tagalog) are desirable for some positions.
Selection Procedure:
The selection process includes the following examination weights:
Application and Supplemental Application: Qualifying
Written Examination: Qualifying
Applicants will be invited to take either the National Testing Network Frontline Exam (NTN) or the California POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB). The written exam requirement may be waived for applicants with qualifying scores from previous testing.
Veterans who pass the examination may receive an additional credit of 10 points (or 15 points for disabled veterans) on their score if they provide a DD-214 form indicating honorable discharge.
The eligible list is continuous, and candidates may apply only once during a four-month period. Those placed on the list will receive information regarding the Long Beach Police Academy Orientation.
