As an Interpreter at PHC, you will provide comprehensive interpretation and translation for non-English speaking people, their families, and health center staff.

This position typically works at PHC at Mercy Family Medicine Residency Clinic and is scheduled Monday - Friday 8 AM - 4:30 PM. You may occasionally be needed to cover other shifts or to work at other PHC clinics in Ames, Des Moines, and Marshalltown. Mileage reimbursement and/or an out of town travel bonus may apply.

What You Will Do

1. Provides accurate and effective interpretation of the patient or client encounter, including medical or dental procedures, necessary paperwork, medication information and education, as well as other interactions for non-English speaking patients (adults and children), their families and health center staff. Interaction may occur in person and/or on the telephone.
2. Provides accurate and effective translation of written documents, correspondence and brochures used by patients and families.
3. Provides information and consultation to health center staff regarding cultural or ethnic issues.
4. Refers patient concerns/issues to appropriate health center staff.
5. Performs various duties as assigned, such as answering telephones, taking messages, scanning incoming documents into the electronic health record, copying documents as needed, and checking patients out at the end of their visit.

Qualifications You Will Need

1. High School Diploma or equivalent.

2. One-year experience as interpreter and translator.

3. Bilingual in Spanish and English and familiarity with the culture involved.

4. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and electronic medical record software.

5. Ability to translate language to written form.

Your experience and skills determine your base pay. The hiring range for this position is typically $15.50-19.40. Candidates with extensive related experience may be considered for additional compensation up to the pay range maximum of $23.25 per hour.
