Job Summary

The RN First Assistant (RNFA) plays a crucial role as the surgical first assistant, working under the guidance of the surgeon during the intra-operative phase of surgery. In addition, the RNFA will step into the role of a Registered Nurse as needed, ensuring seamless support for our patients and healthcare team.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Assist with procedural setup and ensure patient preparedness through effective positioning, prepping, and draping.
  • Support the surgeon with skin closure, subcutaneous closure, tying techniques, and hemostatic procedures.
  • Establish and maintain a safe peri-operative environment, adhering to aseptic techniques.
  • Participate in patient transport and room turnover to optimize service utilization efficiently.
  • Function as a Registered Nurse, circulating cases as needed.
  • Act as an educator, mentor, and resource for patients and colleagues alike.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the team.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a surgical first assistant program is required.
  • Valid RN License from Virginia or a reciprocal compact state is essential.
  • Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) certification is required.
  • AHA BLS Provider CPR certification is required at hire.
  • BSN is preferred; Registered Nurses with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing must obtain their BSN within five years of hire (Effective March 2014).
  • Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) certification is preferred.
