The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (In-Training) to join our regional maintenance team. This journey-level position operates a variety of highway equipment and tools to maintain and repair highways and structures, ensuring safe and efficient transportation. Under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, you will perform highly skilled maintenance tasks and occasionally lead a crew. This role is essential in promoting a respectful and inclusive work environment, with a strong focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

* Perform day-to-day highway maintenance operations under general direction.

* Operate power tools such as chainsaws, weed eaters, and hedge trimmers.

* Perform manual labor using hand tools for extended periods.

* Establish, maintain, and repair landscaped areas.

* Operate mowers and chippers for landscape maintenance.

* Perform drainage maintenance and repair on various structures.

* Install, maintain, and repair guardrails, fences, and other safety features.

* Conduct routine inspections of highway features and document activities.

* Assist in assembling, installing, and replacing signs and sign components.

* Maintain equipment and perform snow and ice removal during winter conditions.

Qualifications

This is a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level, depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal "in-training" plan.

At the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 level, the following is required:

* One (1) year of experience performing maintenance activities or equivalent.

* Education from a trade school may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

* Must obtain Washington State CDL Class A driver's license with endorsement "N" and without air brake restriction and no transmission restrictions within 12 months of employment.

At the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 level, the following is required:

* High school graduation or GED.

* Valid Washington State CDL Class A driver's license with the endorsement "N" and without air brake restriction, with a valid medical card.

Experience requirements:

* Two (2) years of highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, or heavy equipment experience.

OR

* One (1) year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or equivalent.

In addition to the following (applies to both levels):

* Ability to work long hours in outdoor conditions, during both day and night, in various weather conditions. It involves navigating rough terrain, working at heights over 25 feet, and encountering hazardous materials. Workers must also manipulate up to 50 lbs. and may be exposed to hot asphalt up to 350 degrees.

It is preferredthat qualified candidates also have the following:

* Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card

* Washington State Pesticide Applicator's License

* Backflow Prevention Tester Certification.

* Crane Certificate

* This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.

* Depending on qualifications, this position can be filled at the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 - 2 levels:

* Highway Maintenance Worker 1 - annual salary range: $53,958 - $65,412.

* Highway Maintenance Worker 2 - annual salary range: $60,858 - $74,106.

* The salary listed includes the legislatively approved 10% Group C premium for HMW positions located in Bellevue, WA, King County.

* The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.

* This position is not eligible for remote work.

* Typical schedule: Tuesday to Friday, 40 hours per week, 4 shifts of 10 hours each, from 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM. May be required to work weekends, holidays, and non-scheduled/call-out emergencies.

* Must maintain a Valid Washington State COL Class A driver's license with the endorsement "N" and without air brake restriction throughout employment.

* Ability to operate Class A, B, and C equipment w/current technology in highway maintenance operations.

* Must obtain a Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card and maintain the card throughout employment.

* WSDOT does not use the E-Verify system; therefore, we are not eligible to extend STEM Optional Practical Training (OPT). For more information, please visit
